While working as a military observer in Lebanon, J-P Peltonen gets his hands on an American military knife. The weight, usability and balance of the knife are in a class of their own and make a deep impression on Mr. Peltonen.
The idea of a knife with similar characteristics, but suited to the conditions of the North, remains smoldering in his mind.
Thus began the story of the Ranger Puukko and its long journey from the plains of the Middle East to the Finnish forests.
Finland has a unique knife culture and strong traditions in knife making. Finnish knife manufacturers are rare, as the craft demands special artisanal skills and a deep understanding, particularly in handling carbon steel. For over a decade, Peltonen Knives' blades have been handcrafted by Finnish artisans at the workshop of Laurin Metalli, established in Kauhava in 1918.
A good knife requires not only safety and durability but also ease of maintenance and keeping it clean, along with a secure grip and ergonomic design. Peltonen Knives' embody all these qualities, seamlessly combining ergonomics, functionality, and above all, safety. Our knives rank among the world's finest, being both long-lasting and adaptable to various needs and purposes. They are designed and crafted carefully based on genuine experiences, with continuous refinement and improvement.
The Ranger Puukko is an authentic Finnish design, developed and tested by professionals.
The sheath is half of the knife
Considerable attention has been given to the design of Peltonen Knives' sheaths. J-P Peltonen designed them to be long-lasting, versatile, and safe.
The knife's leather sheath, crafted in the traditional Finnish way, represents true Nordic craftsmanship. Alternatively, plastic composite sheaths offer a more modern material, providing lightweight and easy maintenance. The third material used is Kydex, equally durable, lightweight, and easy to maintain, with various colors and camouflage patterns available.
Coatings give protection and ease the maintenance
We manufacture Peltonen Knives' with both coated and uncoated blades, each selected for different purposes. Coating options include PTFE Teflon and Cerakote.
Teflon coating requires minimal maintenance, withstands wear, and is certified for food use. Conversely, Cerakote coating offers superior corrosion protection and allows for color usage. An uncoated blade represents a very traditional Finnish blade finish, requiring the most maintenance.
A knife should always be maintained with the respect it deserves. Dry it properly after use and regularly oil the blade. A carbon steel knife can be sharpened, for example, with a whetstone.
Durable and secure handle with and excellent grip
Peltonen Knives' handles result from years of design work, originating from genuine needs and intended uses of the knife. The durable handle made of thermoplastic vulcanizate is produced by injection molding, with the blade's tang extending through the handle.
